Making a Sowing Calendar
I have tried several
different ways to remind me when to sow seeds, especially for
successional sowing. I have set digital reminders on my computer
and written them on a calendar. The problem in both cases, is
that it is not always possible to sow the seeds on that day due
to poor weather or extenuating circumstances, and then I found
that I tended to forget. I've been using a new system this year
which has worked very well, so I decided to share it. Please
note that the calendar has 29 days in February to allow for Leap
Years, and every seventh day in a normal year is shaded to make
it easy to keep track of weeks.

Step 1
Click the image to the right to
open a .pdf file of the calendar. Print out a copy - there are 4
pages. |
|
Step 2
Laminate the pages. You can
laminate them separately or do Jan/Feb/Mar with Jul/Aug/Sep on
the back, and Apr/May/Jun with Oct/Nov/Dec.

Step 1
Rather than writing directly on
the calendar, write the name of the plant on a Post-It strip,
and attach this to the calendar. If you cannot get hold of the
little bookmark strips, you can cut pieces from standard
Post-Its.

|
Step 2
Having sown a batch of seeds, it
is simple to remove the strip from the calendar, and move it
down a week or two if you intend to sow more. If not, just stick
it elsewhere to reuse next year. |
|
If you laminated the calendar
in two pairs of pages, once March is over, you can turn over
that page, so you always have six months on display.
Using this system, I found that any notes that were missed for
any reason become very obvious, avoiding the chance of
forgetting. |
