Making a Compost Press

You can use timber or plywood to make one of these. However this plastic version will not warp or rot, and can easily be washed to prevent the spread of diseases. Also, I happened to have an old chopping board which was no longer fit to use with food. This simple tool will save you a lot of time if you sow as many seeds as I do.

Materials & Tools

Plastic chopping board

Tape Measure

2 screws, Screwdriver

Saw

Drill, drill bit, countersink bit

Step 1

Measure the dimensions of the inside of your seed tray. I decided to make my press for a half-tray, which ended up at 20 x 15 cm (8" x 6").

Step 2

Mark the rectangle onto the chopping board and cut it with the saw. Mark a couple of strips about 2.5cm (1") wide for a handle.

Step 3

Cut the two strips which will form the handle.

Step 4

Drill pilot holes for the screws through both strips and counter-sink the upper ones.

Step 5

Screw the handle to the base-board.

Using your Compost Press

Step 1

Overfill a tray filled with sieved compost.

Step 2

To level the compost, slide the press along the top edge of the tray to remove the excess.

Step 3

The tray is now full and level.

Step 4

Now place the press on top of the compost and push down.

Step 5

This leaves a nice level surface to sow seeds.
