How to Save Your Own Shallot Sets
Note that this will NOT work for ordinary onions.
If replanted, onions will go to seed.

Step 1
Choose firm shallots which are around
the size of a hen's egg. Do not select bulbs which show any
sign of disease or damage.
|
|
Step 2
Once thoroughly dried, cut the
stem about 2.5 centimetres / 1 inch above the bulb.
|
|
Step 3
Trim the roots, but be careful
not to damage the base-plate.
|
|
Step 4
Remove any loose or split skins. |
|
Step 5
Place the bulbs in cardboard egg
boxes - plastic may cause them to sweat and rot. Store somewhere cool and dark
with good ventilation - a shed or garage is a good option unless
you have a root cellar. |
|
Step 6
Check the bulbs every week or
two for signs of pests or disease. Take them out of storage when
you are ready to plant them the following spring.
